Did you know that taking care of your home appliances is one of the best ways to save money? Cleaning and maintaining your appliances regularly make them last for their life expectency and even beyond. With the following maintenance tips, you can save money on repairing or replacing your home appliances.

1. Air conditioner

Clean your air filter every month. Your air conditioner requires more energy to run if the air filter is dirty and clogged and thus resulting in higher electricity bills.

Check and maintain your air conditioner regularly to prevent water leaks. Under the Public Health and Municipal Services Ordinance, Chapter 132, a person allows his air conditioner to discharge water in such a manner to be a nuisance is an offence. The penalty can be $10,000 with a daily fine of $200.

2. Refrigerator

Do not overpack your refrigerator and slam the door frequently. Remember to clean the shelves and walls of the refrigerator every 2 months with a mild detergent to keep the food and beverage from germs and bacteria.

3. Washing Machine

Overloading your washing machine may cause damage to its components. It’s easy to prevent mold, mildew and odors, all you have to do is to deep clean the washer with a speciality cleaner from time to time and leave the lid ajar after every load of wash. Also, check the drain hose and water pump regularly to protect your home and your downstairs neighbor’s ceiling against water damage.

4. Television

Televisions may malfunction due to humidity, therefore, do not install it under the air conditioner. As TV screens are fragile, periodically wipe your TV screen as gentle as possible with a special cleaning detergent. Never use any standard types of tissue paper or paper towel as it may scratch the screen.

5. Kettle/Thermo Pot

If you want to remove the limescale in your kettle or thermo pot, try this: add 25g of citric acid powder into the water and let it boil, then leave it to soak for an hour.

6. Hair Dryer

Unplug the hair dryer, brush off the dust on the back cover, clean it with a damp towel, then dry it with a tissue paper or towel. Turn the hair dryer on and switch to the cool air flow mode to get rid of the rest of the dust.

7. Dehumidifier

Generally, a dehumidifier requires a decent space for ventilation. Use your dehumidifier on a flat surface and in an open space so that it can function properly. Clean the water tank occasionally to prevent mold and germs.

8. Water Heater

When it comes to water heaters, safety is always the top priority. If your water heater is not well maintained, it may cause water leaks and may even result in an explosion. The hot water may damage your floor, and seep through the ceilings of the flat below. Therefore please remember to check the pipe connections and batteries regularly. If there is any problem, obtain the service of a professional to inspect and examine your water heater.
