7 things to know about being a novice motorcyclist in Hong Kong

Passing your driving test is not easy, being a novice motorcyclist in Hong Kong is even harder. Accumulating riding experience takes time, however you can get prepare yourself with the following tips during probationary driving period.

1. “P” plate

You are required to display a “P” plate at the front and rear of your motorcycle. The “P” plates have to be made of reflecting material, and adhere to the requirements shown below:

2. Protective helmet

A helmet that is too tight won’t feel comfortable, on the other hand too loose will not provide enough protection. Choose a helmet which fits your head size snugly and has removable inner paddings for easier cleaning. 

3. Must-have items

i) Gloves

There are gloves made of materials such as leather, textile, and hybrid material etc. Consider buying one that suits your needs.

ii) Rain jacket and rain pants

Prepare a set of rain jacket and pants in the trunk and pick a color that stands out in the rain.

4. Dangerous items

Avoid storing the following items in the trunk as they can be a hazard at a high temperature. 

i) Lighter

ii) Battery and portable charger

5. Dash cam

Record your surroundings with a dashboard camera while riding as it provides video evidence to the police and insurance in the event of an incident or accident.

6. Motorcycle insurance (Applicable to probationary driving licence)

According to the Motor Vehicles Insurance (Third-party Risks) Ordinance, Cap 272, Page 4, any driver including the registered vehicle owner has the responsibility of ensuring the presence of a valid third-party risks insurance policy for the vehicle concerned whilst using it on the road. 

Make sure you buy a valid motorcycle insurance which is applicable to probationary driving licence. 

7. Regulations

As a new driver, you must observe the additional regulations as below. If you commit a road traffic offence, your probationary driving licence shall be extended for at least 6 months or cancelled upon conviction. 

i) No driving at a speed in excess of 70km/h, even if the speed limit of the road is above 70km/h.

ii) Headlights and taillights must be always on when driving.

iii) Not carrying any passenger on the motorcycle when driving

iv) Not driving on the offside lane of expressways where there are 3 or more traffic lanes.
